How to Remove Sticker Residue from All Surfaces

Blog

We all use stickers for different reasons which include reminder notes, wall covers and even colorful decorations. Stickers are fun for kids as well, and we all have to admit that they can be a permanent fixture in homes with young children.

Moreover, when these stickers get old and you peel them, the residue and ripped paper on walls and other surfaces can be annoying. Whether you use them for labels, price tags, or decorations, it is wise to know how to remove them from all kinds of surfaces.

Stickers can make any surface appear dirty or old because it stick to glass, plastic, wood, metal, and even fabric. Sometimes it feels like no matter how hard you try, the glue just won’t come off. We will discuss how you can get stickers off from all kinds of surfaces.

What is Sticker Residue?

Sticker residue is the glue that stays behind when you peel off a sticker or label. This glue can attract dust and dirt, making the surface look dirty or old. If you don’t clean it, it can become harder to remove over time.

How Can we Get

Things You Can Use to Remove Sticker Residue

Several kinds of solvents, detergents and cleaners can prove useful when you try to remove stickers. You can use the following combinations to remove sticky glue:

  • Soap and warm water
  • Cooking oil (like olive oil or vegetable oil)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol (or nail polish remover with acetone)
  • Peanut butter
  • Hairdryer
  • Plastic scraper or an old credit card
  • Paper towel or clean cloth

Any of these mixtures or formulas can work on different kinds of surfaces and it will give you good results. Let’s see how we can get stickers off different kinds of surfaces:

  • Glass

Whether you are thinking of removing stickers from cups, windowpanes, or glass table tops, it can be tricky because glass shows every little spot, so you want it to look clean.

You can warm the glue on the glass by using a hairdryer to heat the sticky part for about 30 seconds. This will soften the glue. Then, put a little cooking oil or rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.

Rub it gently over the glue. The next step will be to use a clean cloth and some soap with warm water to wipe everything off. In case the glue is still visible on the surface, repeat the steps but remember to be gentle when using sharp tools. You don’t want to scratch the glass.

  • Plastic

There are several plastic surfaces where stickers are used. These include toys, machinery, electronics and even decorations. It can be a tricky surface because plastic can get scratched easily or lose its color if you use strong chemicals.

You can remove stickers by applying a bit of oil to the sticky area. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then use a cloth or old toothbrush to rub the glue gently. You can clean the area with warm soapy water and wipe it dry.

However, it is vital to remember that you don’t use too much alcohol or acetone on plastic as it might damage the surface.

  • Wood

There are many wooden surfaces like tables, chairs and doors where stickers can be used. This surface is challenging as it has a special finish like polish or paint that can be damaged easily.

To remove stickers from the wood, rub a bit of cooking oil or peanut butter over the sticker spot. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Then use your fingernail or an old credit card to scrape off the glue.

You can wipe the area with a damp cloth and a little bit of dish soap. You mustn’t use too much water on wood. It can soak in and cause damage.

  • Metal

You must have seen stickers on lockers, bicycles, cars, and refrigerator doors which can be difficult to remove. Metal is a tough surface, but you still want it to look shiny and clean.

You can heat it as it does not deform or lose its original shape or appearance. Use a hairdryer to warm the glue so that it becomes easier to remove. Then pour a small amount on a cloth and rub the sticky spot.

You will see several scraps of paper come off instantly. Moreover, a plastic scraper works well on metal surfaces. You can follow another round of clean-up with warm, soapy water. Do not use steel wool or sharp metal tools because they can leave scratches.

  • Clothing and Fabric

Many times clothes come with stickers on them and you might find it harder to remove because glue can get deep into the fibers of the cloth. The best way to remove glue from cloth is to freeze it so the glue hardens. If the glue is thick or hard, put the clothing in the freezer for an hour so that you can peel it easily. The next step is to gently rub a bit of oil or white vinegar onto the sticky part.

After treating the area, wash the cloth like you normally do but make sure that you check the label before using anything strong on clothes. Some fabrics are delicate.

  • Laptops, Phones, and Screens

Although phones and screens are made of plastic, glass and other materials mentioned above; we are mentioning it separately because electronics can be delicate to handle and require careful cleaning steps.

You can use alcohol or cleaning spray for these electronics by putting just a drop on a soft cloth instead of pouring it onto the surface. Rub in small circles and do not press too hard.

Afterwards, use a dry cloth to wipe it dry and make sure no oil is left behind. Ensure that you do not use water or soak the device. It can damage the inside parts.

Some Extra Tips to Clean Various Surfaces

Ensure that you take a few precautionary steps when cleaning different kinds of surfaces. You should test the cleaning process on a small part of the surface. Before using anything strong, try it on a small hidden part of the surface to make sure it doesn’t get ruined.

Moreover, you will have to be patient and keep your movements gentle. Sometimes it takes a few tries to remove all the glue. Do not try and make the solvent or cleaner stronger. Never mix vinegar and bleach, or any other strong cleaners because it can be dangerous.

Remember to use softer tools instead of knives or cutters, which may injure your hand. An old credit card, a plastic knife, or a fingernail is better than metal blades.

Final Thoughts

Next time you remove a sticker, try peeling it off slowly and clean the glue right away. But we have explained how you can clean every kind of surface without too much hassle.
