What Food and Beverage Brands Should Know Before Sending Artwork to Print

A production delay doesn’t always start on the production floor.

Sometimes it begins days or weeks earlier, when artwork is sent to a label printer before every detail has been finalized.

For food and beverage brands, getting artwork ready for print involves more than approving the design.

Product information, packaging specifications, regulatory content, materials, and production requirements all need to line up before the file moves forward.

Make Sure the Artwork Is Actually Final

“Final” should mean more than the marketing team has approved the design.

Before sending artwork to print, confirm that ingredients, nutrition information, allergen statements, product claims, barcodes, net weight, and other required content reflect the latest approved information. This is especially important when several departments contribute to the label.

The risk increases when multiple versions of the artwork are circulating. Establish which file is approved for production and make sure outdated versions are removed from the process.

Confirm the Package, Material, and Application

Artwork cannot be evaluated separately from the package it will eventually go on.

The label dimensions need to work with the container, while the material and adhesive need to match the conditions the product will encounter. Refrigeration, freezing, moisture, oils, condensation, and frequent handling can all influence label performance.

Brands should also confirm how labels will be applied. Labels intended for automated application may have different production requirements than those applied by hand.

Resolving these questions before artwork reaches production gives the printer the information needed to prepare the job correctly.

Don’t Treat Pre-Press as a Formality

Even well-prepared artwork still needs technical review before printing.

During pre-press, files can be evaluated for elements such as dimensions, resolution, color setup, bleeds, dielines, and other print requirements. These details may seem removed from the finished product, but they determine whether a digital design can be reproduced successfully on press.

When technical issues are discovered late, the job may need to return to the designer for corrections and another approval cycle.

That can be particularly disruptive when labels are tied to a product launch or scheduled production run.

Give Your Printer the Complete Picture

Sending a file shouldn’t be the beginning of the conversation with your label partner.

Share the intended container, application method, environmental conditions, quantities, deadlines, and any special production requirements early. If a new package is being introduced, involving the printer before artwork is finalized can also uncover potential issues while they’re still relatively easy to address.

Food and beverage brands move quickly, but sending artwork to print before it’s truly ready rarely saves time. A more disciplined handoff gives everyone involved an opportunity to catch problems before they reach production.

M&R Label works with brands to review artwork and production requirements before labels go to press. When the details are settled upfront, the path from approved artwork to finished labels becomes much easier to manage.
